Discussing the death of Leyden and praising his character; encouraging Carpenter to return to England before his circle of friends is "materially diminish'd;" mentioning the good health of his family and describing his prosperous financial affairs; mentioning the purchase of Abbotsford and discussing his plans to improve the estate; discussing mutual acquaintances and the political situation at home and abroad. With a postscript dated 24 August discussing Wellington's victory at the Battle of Salamanca.
